How to change your plates to Pennsylvania

Welcome to Pennsylvania! There are a few important steps to take in order to comply with PennDOT regulations and ensure your vehicle is properly titled and registered in the state. Here's a guide to help make the process smooth and stress-free.

"How long do I have to get registered in PA?"

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), you have 20 days after you establish residency to change your vehicle's title, plate, and registration to PA. 

"Do I need PA plates and registration for a Philadelphia Residential Parking Permit?"

Yes, you need Pennsylvania plates and proof of registration in order to get a Residential Parking Permit.

"Where do I have to go to change my plates and registration to PA?"

In Pennsylvania, the DMV does not handle vehicle title transfers and plates/registration. You have to stop by our agency located at 811 S Broad St, Philadelphia PA 19147.

"How long does the process take?"

Transferring your vehicle's title, plate and registration at our office is simple and only takes about 15-20 minutes if you come in with all of your documents. You will receive your plate and registration card right here in the office, on the same day.

"What do I need to get plates and registration in PA?"

To get started with transferring your vehicle title and registration to Pennsylvania, you'll need the following documents:

• Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License or Pennsylvania Photo ID

  • Before you can register your vehicle, you'll need to have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license or photo identification card. 

• Certificate of Title

  • The certificate of title from the state where your vehicle is currently registered is required. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, all owners must be present when transferring the title to a Pennsylvania title. If all owners cannot be present, an owner can give a power of attorney to someone else so that they can sign in their place.

• Pennsylvania Insurance ID Card

  • If you plan to register your vehicle in Pennsylvania, you’ll need a valid PA insurance identification card. The card must include the name of the purchaser (you), and it needs to be current at the time of registration.

• Proof of Sales Tax Paid (if applicable)

  • If the issue date on your vehicle's title is less than six months ago, PennDOT requires proof that sales tax was paid in the state where you previously registered. Documents that prove this could include a bill of sale from the dealership you purchased the vehicle from or registration documents from your prior state that show the amount of sales tax you've paid.
