Transferring a Vehicle out of Your Name

"How do I sell/gift my vehicle in PA?"

When selling or gifting your vehicle, the purchaser has transfer the title of the vehicle into their name.

To do so, please head down to our office (located at 811 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19147) with the following documents:

• Certificate of Title

  • We need to submit the signed, original title to the PA Dept. of Transportation in order to transfer ownership.

• Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License or Pennsylvania Photo ID

  • We need a valid, physical form of ID in order to notarize your signature. 

• Bill of Sale (if applicable)

  • If you have a bill of sale, please bring it with you.

"Do I need to come to the office with the purchaser?"

It depends on which state your title is from. Some titles require the seller to have their signature notarized. We always have notaries available at the office. If your signature needs to get notarized, you can either come to the office or get it notarized elsewhere and hand it to the purchaser.

"I'm gifting the vehicle. Does that change anything?"

To process a gift transaction, we need a few additional documents. If the vehicle currently has a PA title, the gift giver/receiver both have to fill out and sign Pennsylvania's Affidavit of Gift form (MV-13ST), which is available online.

If the vehicle's current title is out-of-state, the PA Gift form (MV-13ST) has to be filled out and we need proof that sales tax was paid by the gift giver (you) in your home state. Documents that prove this could include a bill of sale from the dealership you purchased the vehicle from or registration documents from the prior state that show the amount of sales tax that was paid. 

"Can I transfer my plate to the purchaser?"

In Pennsylvania, plates/registration can be transferred between spouses, children, and parents. If this applies to you and you want to transfer your plate/registration to the purchaser, you must come into the office to sign a form.
